Hull City-set-to-complete third summer signing after big transfer breakthrough

Hull City are working hard in bringing in new arrivals ahead of the big kick-of

Hull City are closing in on the capture of German midfielder Marvin Mehlem in what will be a further boost to Tim Walter’s squad with less than two weeks to go until the new season gets under way.

Mehlem was left out of the SV Darmstadt team that played – and beat – City’s Championship rivals Coventry City 2-0 on Saturday as a move to the MKM Stadium nears, with the Bundesliga club revealing on social media that he was nearing an exit after seven years at the Merck-Stadion am Böllenfalltor.

The 26-year-old, who can operate across midfield but is capable of playing in an attacking role on the right, is under contract with the club who were relegated to Bundesliga 2 last term until next summer, with City confident of securing a permanent deal.

Mehlem is no stranger to Walter having come through the ranks at Karlsruhe when Walter worked at the club, and is understood to have jumped at the chance to work under his compatriot and test himself in English football.

In his 191 appearances for the club, the former German youth international has bagged 21 goals and played a key role in helping the club win promotion to the Bundesliga, but was unable to help the Lilies avoid an instant return to the second tier.

City are working hard in bringing in new arrivals ahead of the big kick-off with boss Walter hoping there will be major progress made before the final game of pre-season at Reading on Saturday.

Talks are progressing with Wigan Athletic over a move for young defender Charlie Hughes, while they remain optimistic about securing a deal for Basel’s Canadian international winger Liam Millar and Leicester City ace Kasey McAteer. The club remain keen to add a goalkeeper, another winger and two strikers to their ranks before the transfer window closes at 11pm on August 30.

Meanwhile, left-back James Furlong, who arrived on deadline day from Brighton last summer, is a loan target for League Two outfit AFC Wimbledon. Walter has Matty Jacob, Ryan Giles and Brandon Fleming available to play at left-back, while Lewie Coyle switched there during Saturday’s 2-0 home defeat to Newcastle United when Jacob was hauled off after a disastrous first half.

Wow, how many injuries did we get at the start of last season, we need at least 10 more players through the door as Walters will need cover for every first choice player. At the moment he’s barely got 11 first choice players let alone cover for them…

Optimism at an all time low by the looks of things. Timmy boy must be thinking what he’s got himself into at the moment. Expecting more signings before the Brizzle game
