4 Premier League players that Hull City could sign ft Tom Cannon

Hull City have plenty of work to do between now and the beginning of the season.

However, that may not deter their previously well-documented ambitions when it comes to who Tim Walter and the recruitment staff at the MKM Stadium look to target in the remainder of the transfer window.

Having lost the star names of Jaden Philogene and Jacob Greaves to Ipswich Town and Aston Villa, City will be hoping to add sufficient quality to their ranks to fill such voids.

The Tigers’ use of the loan market and Premier League squad players was well-documented under Liam Rosenior as the likes of Tyler Morton, Fabio Carvalho and Liam Delap all blossomed in Black and Amber.

With that in mind, Football League World looks at another quartet of players from the top flight who Walter could lure to East Yorkshire this summer.

Tom Cannon scores for Leicester City
Kickstarting this list is Leicester City’s Tom Cannon, who has become a household name in the Championship in recent seasons.

The former Everton man’s first spell in the second tier was a fruitful half-season stint at Preston North End in 2023, finding the net eight times in just 20 appearances, which led to many clubs expressing their desire to sign him this time last year.

Ultimately, the eventual champions would acquire his signature for a reported £7.5m fee, but Cannon’s involvement in the Foxes’ title-winning success was as a bit-part player, although he did score twice in 13 league appearances under Enzo Maresca.

Following the Italian’s departure to Chelsea, new boss Steve Cooper revealed that he would cast an eye over the 21-year-old’s performances this pre-season amid interest from Stoke City regarding a loan deal, and if such circumstances were to eventually pan out, Hull could do much worse than at least join the queue of potential suitors.

The striking department is extremely light on numbers at the MKM at present, despite Walter exercising a recall clause for Colombian frontman Oscar Estupinan, and Cannon would add more than adequate Championship quality as well as offering a different dimension to the Tigers’ attack.

Kortney Hause -Kortney Hause of Aston Villa

Kortney Hause would bring a wealth of Championship experience to the City defence, and despite well-documented injury setbacks, it wouldn’t be the worst move in the world.

The 29-year-old hasn’t kicked a ball in anger since September 2022, but with Hull in need of new additions across the park, a chance for Hause to seek new pastures after becoming the forgotten man at Villa Park could turn his head.

Hause missed nearly two seasons’ worth of action as he recovered over a knee problem which resulted in an impasse between Villa and Watford before his return to the West Midlands side.

However, the ex-Wolves man has been a seasoned second tier player throughout his career, and being left-footed, could be seen somewhat of a replacement for Greaves as they are hard to come by on the market.

City still have another left-footed centre-half on their books in Sean McLoughlin, who was a target for Blackburn Rovers before Alan Nixon stated that an eventual deal between the Irishman and the Lancashire side had been ruled out.

Regardless, it would be wise of City to add further depth to this department,

Hause has 81 appearances in the second tier to his name, with the last of those experiences resulting in Villa’s return to the Premier League in May 2019, with the defender featuring 12 times – 10 of which were starts – as he, Tyrone Mings and Axel Tuanzebe all played key roles in aiding Dean Smith’s success story in B6.

Luke Cundle of Wolves

Luke Cundle has impressed in a trio of loan spells with Swansea City, Plymouth Argyle and Stoke City, and the Wolves man’s presence would be a welcome addition to a midfield which has lost the services of many key performers in recent times.

The 22-year-old registered 19 goal contributions – seven goals and 11 assists – for the aforementioned trio of clubs, proving his immediate qualities as a creative playmaker in sides always looking to dominate games and be on the front foot, similar to what Ozan Tufan and Morton were deployed as under Liam Rosenior last term.

The Tigers were blessed with goals from midfield last season, although 25 of those 27 strikes have since dissipated through contract or loan expirations alongside Tufan’s exit to Trabzonspor last month.

Although Steven Schumacher was able to eventually bring his former Argyle loanee to the Bet365 Stadium on a temporary basis once again in January, there was initial talk of a £1.5m transfer for the Compton Park academy graduate.

His contract still has two years left to run, meaning that a similar cost could be needed to prize him away from Molineux, but it’s definitely an avenue worth exploring from City’s point of view.

Jeremy Sarmiento for Ipswich Town

Rounding off this quartet is Brighton and Hove Albion’s Jeremy Sarmiento, in what would be a statement loan swoop for the Ecuadorian.

Sarmiento was an impressive figure for both West Bromwich Albion and Ipswich Town last term, scoring five goals as well as one assist and the creation of four big chances across 40 total appearances.

Naturally, at the age of 22, there are aspects of his end product which still need developing before the winger stakes a regular claim for a first-team spot at the AMEX Stadium.

However, Hull is the perfect breeding ground for that to happen, as even with a different manager in charge, Sarmiento can point at the exploits of Delap and Carvalho as examples of forward players who have flourished in East Yorkshire on a temporary basis.

It would also seem that Albion could be keen to see the wide man who started all four of his country’s Copa América games, including a solitary goal in defeat to Venezuela, depart on a short-term basis once more as SPFL side Aberdeen have expressed their interest in a loan move in recent weeks.

It remains to be seen whether the Dons push such interest any further, but after losing the services of Philogene – who was capable of featuring on either flank – City are looking at replacements imminently, such as Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, and Sarmiento is another talent which should be on the club’s radar as a result.
