Tim Walter admits Tuesday night’s 4-0 thumping at Doncaster Rovers highlighted the growing need for reinforcements into his Hull City squad ahead of the new Championship season.

A side made up largely of academy players and returning loanees found themselves four down at the Eco Power Stadium having been two behind at the break before conceding twice early in the second period to Grant McCann’s promotion hopefuls.

Walter introduced many of his first team players for the final minutes of the game but the Tigers were unable to reduce the arrears despite passing up good chances through Ryan Longman, Ryan Giles and Regan Slater.

Walter declared himself pleased with the arrival of Cody Drameh from Leeds United earlier on Tuesday but admitted the lack of depth and quality in his squad need to be dramatically improved if he’s going to have the Tigers challenging at the top end of the Championship when the season gets going in just over two weeks.

“It’s just a friendly,” he told Hull Live. “It’s to test and not more, so that’s the reason why we start in this case like that. We have a game on Saturday (against Newcastle) and now it’s a new game. We came back from Turkey, I think we did a good job in Turkey, especially the two games we worked hard

“So that’s maybe the points we take out of the trip to Turkey and now it was a game for the youngsters and that’s fine to see them, how far they are (away), but what they need for the upcoming future, and that’s what we saw.

“Yes, (some of the youngsters are not quite at the level) that’s what we saw and for everybody who is here or on the TV. They saw that we need more numbers and that’s the point, because, yes, to step into the Championship and to secure our goals, that’s not possible with that squad at the moment.
