Surrey semi-truck driver killed in collision was ‘one turn away’ from finishing his shift

According to Surrey RCMP, the collision happened at around 8:10 p.m. last Tuesday near Highway 17 and 116th Avenue in SurreyA head-on collision last week between two tractor-trailers in Surrey has claimed the life of one driver, leaving a widow to raise their two young childrenmembers has identified the driver as Sandeep Singh Cheema, 41.

“When Sandeep left home for work, he told his daughters Sargun and Mehar, six and two, and his wife Manjeet that he would be back. But that wouldn’t be the case,” his brother-in-law Kiran Singh wrote on the page.

According to Surrey RCMP, the collision happened at around 8:10 p.m. last Tuesday near Highway 17 and 116th Avenue in Surrey.

Cheema was about to turn into his workplace to park his semi-trailer truck for the night when another semi-trailer sped through a red light, according to the family. RCMP wouldn’t confirm Monday if the other truck went through a red light but previously said speed may have been a factor.Cheema was taken to hospital and died after several days in the ICU, his family said.

Sandeep was one turn away from finishing his shift, and reuniting with his family,” Singh wrote.Cheema immigrated to Surrey in 2012 after his father died in a car crash that same year, according to the family. His mother died shortly afterward. Cheema and Manjeet married in 2016.While Sandeep might be gone, his infectious spirit and his love for life are survived by his daughters and his wife,” Singh wrote. “Sandeep’s organs have also been donated so someone else’s life can be saved.”
