Never Give Up: Transfer expert provides update on Middlesbrough pursuit of Hull City’s Ryan Giles…

Middlesbrough continue to be linked with a move for former loanee Ryan Giles during the 2024 summer transfer window.

Ryan Giles joined Middlesbrough on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers for the 2022/23 season.

It was Michael Carrick’s first campaign at the Riverside Stadium and has proven to be his best so far.

Boro finished fourth in the Championship before losing to Coventry City in the play-off semi-finals.

Giles was one of the North East outfit’s standout stars that campaign, providing 11 assists from left-back.

After Middlesbrough failed to win promotion, Wolves sold Giles to then-Premier League outfit, Luton Town.

The defender struggled at Luton before being loaned to Hull City, who have now signed Giles on a permanent deal.

Despite the Tigers only signing the Englishman this summer, Middlesbrough continue to be linked with a transfer.

It was reported at the beginning of this month that Middlesbrough were preparing to make a bid for Giles.

Hull owner Acun Ilicali then revealed the club’s stance on Giles moving to Middlesbrough, stating they would let the Englishman join Boro if he wanted to.

But the Yorkshire outfit’s vice-chairman Tan Kesler then delivered a fresh transfer update on Giles, suggesting he would not be sold to Middlesbrough.

Now, Boro News has spoken to transfer expert Graeme Bailey for an update on the left-back.

It is not great news for fans of the Teessiders though, as Bailey told Boro News that Giles will not be cheap and Hull do not need to sell players.

He said: “Carrick will be backed to a certain extent, whether it’s enough to get Giles, we’ll see.

“[Giles move] more of an opportunistic thing. I think if Giles is available at the right price, but he won’t be cheap.

“Once we’re toward the end of the window. Hull don’t need the money, they’ve raised a bit of money themselves so we’ll see with that one.”

Do Middlesbrough need to sign Ryan Giles

Middlesbrough are currently fairly well stocked in the left-back department going into the 2024/25 Championship season.

Lukas Engel was the club’s first-choice option in that role last term and did a decent job during his first campaign in England.

Alex Bangura deputised for Engel, though his season was hampered by injury somewhat.

Rising star Rav van den Berg can also fill in on the left if required, leaving Carrick with plenty of options.

As a result, though Giles is arguably better than all three of those players at left-back, Middlesbrough may be better served spending their remaining transfer funds in other key areas like left-wing and striker.
