Rafael Nadal won an ’emotional’ doubles match with Casper Ruud at the Swedish Open on Wednesday with Carlos Alcaraz ‘probably busy partying’.

Nadal and Alcaraz have teamed up for the upcoming Olympic tennis tournament, which is being played on the Paris clay at the home of the iconic French Open.

The Olympic tennis action gets underway in just 10 days on July 27 but Alcaraz is still celebrating his recent Wimbledon final triumph over Novak Djokovic.

‘Carlos? He’s busy probably partying after winning Wimbledon,’ Ruud said after he and Nadal defeated Theo Arribage and Roman Safiullin in the quarter-finals.

Nadal admits that Wednesday’s win over their French opponents was an ’emotional match’ after Ruud lost in the Swedish Open singles earlier in the day.

‘It was an emotional match,’ Nadal said. ‘Not easy to be on court after losing singles, but Casper played so well.

Well done for him. We had some fun. A good level of tennis. We enjoyed it. The crowd was amazing. Full crowd in a doubles match. That’s fantastic.’

Nadal is also featuring in the singles in Bastad and played his first match in over seven weeks on Tuesday, conjuring up a 6-3 6-3 victory over Bjorn Borg’s son.

That was the first singles match Nadal has played since his incredibly painful first-round exit at his beloved Grand Slam tournament, Roland-Garros.

The 38-year-old is very much approaching the end of career but seems to be delaying his retirement after being named on the entry list for the US Open.

It was previously thought the ‘King of Clay’ was playing his last season on the ATP Tour in 2024, but it has since been suggested that he could carry on into 2025.

Nadal is back in action on Thursday when he faces British tennis star Cameron Norrie in the last 16 of the Swedish Open singles.
