DETROIT, MI — His public speeches and physical presence under intensifying public focus, President Joe Biden delivered a 35-minute campaign speech Friday, July 12, to more than 2,000 supporters inside Detroit’s Renaissance High School.
The Democrat appeared energized by the almost exclusively Biden-supporting crowd, repeating political messages familiar to people closely following the president’s recent two-week stretch of rallies in American swing states.
Following a debate performance last month that left many top Democrats calling on Biden to end his candidacy rather than risk defeat against Republican opponent Donald Trump, the president has urged supporters to stay unified as the November election approaches.
That debate performance sparked worry among supporters who noted the 81-year-old’s quiet, frail delivery and verbal flubs.
Biden on Friday, though, appeared to present his remarks with a volume and confidence that did not mirror the performance at the scrutinized debate — although, unlike in the debate, Biden this time had access to teleprompters frequently used at rallies by politicians, including Trump.
Trump is even more dangerous now,” Biden said. “He’s unhinged. He says, if he loses, there will be a bloodbath. Trump says, if he wins, he’ll be a dictator on day one. We’re not going to let that happen. Over my dead body.”
Biden said electing Trump would lead to further erosion in public confidence in the American electoral system.
“We’re going to stand up for America and save our democracy,” Biden said.
The president referenced the Jan. 6, 2021, attack where hundreds of Trump supporters broke into the U.S. Capitol, many of them beating and injuring law enforcement officers in brutal hand-to-hand combat as the officers tried to stop them from storming through windows and doors.
Biden and many of his allies blame Trump for instigating the Capitol breach and misleading the public about the incident later.
Biden on Friday also cited a number of the legal challenges Trump continues to face, including when a New York jury in May found him guilty of all 34 charges in a scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election through a hush money payment to a porn actor who said the two had sex.
