Tonight was a big game for the Red Sox. They entered it holding the third and final AL Wild Card spot, and they were hosting a Royals team who was just one game behind them for the position.

But one glace at the starting lineup, and it sure felt a lot less like a big game. Perhaps my frustration here is best summed up by this tweet.

Those three guys could just as easily be starting a Triple-A game given their fringy nature, but due to the way this Red Sox roster is currently constructed, they were put on the front lines to defend the third and final Wild Card spot. It did not go well!

Cooper Criswell took the loss after giving up five runs (only two earned), Romy Gonzalez went hitless and made the error that led to those unearned runs, and Jamie Westbrook … Well, he was actually pretty good, scoring the only Sox run of the night.

The scary thing is he might actually be the fourth hottest option for the Sox right now behind Houck, Crawford and Pivetta. With Bello struggling and everybody else injured, it’s going to get real thin real fast on the other side of the All Star break when there’s less off days and tougher competition.

While Alex Cora, Andrew Bailey, the guys in the rotation, and the rest of the Sox staff have done a masterful job this year of making it all work, at some point they’re going to need more help. Bow and arrows can only hold off guns for so long, no matter how skilled the archer.

Speaking of weaponry, the Royals have an absolute stud in Bobby Witt Jr.! Here’s the solo home run he hit in the 4th inning to one of the deepest parts of Fenway.
