Charlton Athletic have announced the signing of former League One champion Greg Docherty, who commits to a three-year deal at the club.

The Scotsman came through the youth setup at Hamilton Academical and made his first professional appearance at the club in 2013, aged just 16. He played 93 more times for Hamilton, before gaining his dream move to his boyhood club Rangers. However, he failed to perform at Ibrox and was sent out on successive loan spells to Shrewsbury Town and Hibernian.

Off the back of his spell at Hibs, Docherty signed for Hull City, who were then in League One. The Tigers earned promotion as champions in his debut season at the club, with the Scotsman scoring five goals in the process. Under Liam Rosenior, he featured in just 15 Championship fixtures, with the majority of those coming from the substitutes bench. As such, he found himself released at the end of the campaign having failed to earn a fresh deal.

He will now drop back down to League One with Charlton after the Addicks won the battle for his signature. The midfielder becomes Nathan Jones’ seventh signing of the summer as he targets a much-improved campaign next season.

Upon the announcement, manager Jones revealed his delight at the capture:

“We’re really delighted to get this signing over the line, he’s someone we’ve been chasing for a long time, all through the summer. He’s a player who has been promoted from this league and has been a Championship player for a long period of time. He has real pedigree as a person, an athlete and a player.

“He’s someone that we’re really thrilled to have acquired, again we’ve had to beat off a lot of opposition for his signature. He’ll add real competition, real strength, real leadership qualities to the team and there is big scope for him to develop and move forward with us.”

Docherty is a smart pickup for Charlton. He’s a player that has triumphed at this level before and has an abundance of experience in his arsenal. He could be exactly what the Addicks need, a solid, defensive minded player at the base of the midfield. This could help Jones solve one of the major issues from last season, where the team shipped 65 goals.

This is the latest in a string of impressive signings following the acquisition of the likes of Alex Mitchell, Josh Edwards, Luke Berry and Matty Godden. They are clearly trying to build a squad capable of challenging at the top end of the table, which will be no small feat with the calibre of the teams that have come down from the Championship.
