Contract Terminared News : Alabama football general manager announced suddenly due….

No matter how much a sportswriter knows about football, it certainly is far less than what a football coach knows, which is reflected by a few decimal points on the paychecks. And no matter how long and how hard the sportswriter works, it is going to be less than a football coach.

Which brings us to Xen C. Scott, Alabama football coach from 1919-22. Prior to 1919, Alabama had played 25 seasons of football with 13 different head coaches. And Scott was not even a fulltime coach. His real job was sportswriter, covering horse racing in Ohio after finishing the football season, returning in time to prepare for the following season.

Scott appeared to be an excellent choice when Alabama resumed football in 1919 following not playing in 1918 due to World War I. The team went 8-1 and had six shutouts, including the first five

games. He followed that up with a 10-1 season – the first 10-win season for Alabama football – in 1920. Scott’s greatest achievement, though, would come in his last season in 1922, a win that put Alabama football on the national map.
