There are two ways to register to vote: online or using a paper form.

The same process applies whether you wish to vote in person at a polling station, by postal vote or via a proxy voter.

To register online, you can access the online form on the government website here.

If you are unable to register online, you can download a paper form here. This will need to be completed and returned to your local electoral registration office before the deadline.

For those living in Northern Ireland, the paper form is available here.

British citizens living abroad can register using the same online form but will be required to give additional information about where and when they last lived in the UK and passport details.

You don’t need to register to vote before every election.

However, if you move house, change your name or change your nationality you must register to vote again.

If you change your name, you can also contact the electoral services team at your local council to request a change of name form.

You need to be over the age of 16 to register to vote in England and Northern Ireland and over the age of 14 to register to vote in Wales and Scotland. However, you are not eligible to vote until you are aged 18 years or older.

How can I vote?
There are three ways to vote in the upcoming general election: in person at a polling station, by post or by proxy.

Polling booths
Voters will receive a poll card before the election telling them when to vote and at which polling station.

You can only vote at the polling station location on your card but you do not have to take the card with you to vote.

But you will need to give your name and address to the staff inside the station when you arrive and show some form of photo ID.

You will then be given a ballot paper containing a list of the candidates for which you can vote.

Follow the instructions on the notices in the polling booth and on the top of the ballot paper to place your vote.

Polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm on Thursday 4 July.

Postal votes
If you have applied to vote by post, you will be sent your ballot paper ahead of polling day.
