Clark and Reese were snubbed from the 12-player American squad for this summer’s Paris Olympics, with many criticizing the decision to leave the Clark in particular off the roster because of the interest she has brought to women’s basketball over the last few years.

While Clark has been one of the top competitors in women’s basketball during that period, and now has transitioned her career to the WNBA, Reese has been in lockstep with her on that path.

Both players were first-round WNBA Draft picks and played in national championship games in college, with Reese’s LSU squad beating Clark’s Iowa team in last year’s final.

And per Weatherspoon, Reese is ‘showing’ why Clark is not the only star-studded rookie that could represent the United States in the Olympics when they are in Los Angeles in 2028 and beyond.

‘Come on now, I know you’re not asking me that question,’ Weatherspoon said. ‘Does she have what it takes? She’s showing it… She has what it takes. You’re doggone right she has what it takes.’

‘Kamilla (Cardoso) has what it takes as well to compete for her country,’ Weatherspoon continued about her Brazilian rookie. ‘Everybody on this team has what it freaking takes. We all do.’

Only four members of the 12 women selected to compete for the United States in Paris, including Sabrina Inoescu, had never represented America at an Olympiad before.

Even with the stiff competition to make the roster, Weatherspoon has no doubts about Reese wearing the red, white, and blue at the highest level in the future.

‘Angel is going to be Angel,’ Weatherspoon added. ‘She’s off the charts rebounding the basketball, getting us second-chance opportunities. She’s going to be even better at finishing around the rim… She’s just going to continue to rise. She’s a champion, she’s a freaking winner. All she wanna do is freaking win.’

For the Los Angeles Olympics, some spots could open up for the American roster, as five members of the team are 30 or older, including 42-year-old Diana Taurasi.
