It left Perez as the clear candidate for the race seat which has been the subject of much speculation over the last 12 months. The 34-year-old has been fighting for his future since a poor run of form last season which began in May 2023 with a wretched weekend at the Monaco Grand Prix.
His short-lived title challenge against team-mate Verstappen faded badly as Perez struggled to get the most out of the Red Bull car which dominated the championship. He finished second in the drivers’ standings, but with fewer than half the number of points amassed by the Dutchman.
