Barkley, a former New York Giant, was given a three-year deal worth nearly $38 million dollars

It had to be feeling pretty damn nice for the Philadelphia Eagles right now. They had a great start to 2024 NFL free agency when they signed Saquon Barkley, one of the top players from their division foe. They signed a couple more players to bolster their roster even though they could have settled right then and there.

The Eagles required additions to their squad in order to remain competitive, as some players (Jason Kelce and Fletcher Cox, good luck) announced their retirements. This offseason, they have made a lot of transactions. Let’s examine them and determine which have been the greatest and worst.

First, let us address the major issues. When the Eagles signed Saquon Barkley, one of the top free agents among running backs, they did it nearly instantly. Former New York Giant Barkley agreed to a three-year contract worth approximately $38 million. That’s a lot of money, especially for a running back.

Barkley will be incredible running behind the Eagles’ talented offensive line. They’ve been able to produce 1,000-yard rushers year after year, and adding Barkley’s vision and quickness to that line will help the offense return to form after a dismal 2023 season.

The real risk to this contract is Barkley’s health. While he hasn’t missed as much time as he did in years past, the new Eagles RB still dealt with injuries on a consistent basis last season. A deal worth around $13 million per year isn’t that bad, but it will look worse if he goes down with long-term injuries. Still, the positives far outweigh the few negatives for this deal.
