Miami Hurricanes spring practice features young players stepping up and competition brewing…

There have been competitive matchups between an early enrollee wide receiver and an experienced Miami cornerback.

The duels between rookie wide receiver Joshisa “JoJo” Trader and seasoned cornerback Daryl Porter Jr. caught his attention the most during Miami’s practice last Friday, according to Miami recruiting target Jaylen “Hollywood” Bell, who I spoke with this week. “Iron sharpening iron” was his description of it.

Porter finished last season as Miami’s best cover corner. Pro Football Focus gave him an outstanding rating of 80.6, and in 104 covering snaps, he only allowed 9 receiving yards. Conversely, Trader was a standout prospect in the United States coming out of Hollywood, Florida’s Chaminade-Madonna High School. JoJo’s agility and diversity of moves have made him difficult to cover in his first week of spring training. Definitely the hardest opponent for him to face is Porter. They will both get better after practicing side by side. Miami hasn’t held competitions like this one frequently enough in recent years.

Malik Bryant, a second-year defender who was drafted as a 4-Star linebacker, may be moving more toward an edge-rusher position. At Orlando Jones High School, he was a standout pass-rusher.

-Other young receivers who are making an impression in practice include Robby Washington, Ny Carr, and Nathaniel Ray Ray Joseph, in addition to JoJo Trader. Carr is a freshman early enrollee, just like Trader.

-Several players have made it apparent on social media that they are still in the facility working, despite the fact that Miami is on spring break this week and there are no official workouts. Tuesday, March 19th is when we’ll be practicing next.
