Phillies signed All-Star reliever Whit Merrifield on Friday, signing the veteran to a one-year, $8 million contract. On Monday, the team officially introduced him to spring training and gave him jersey number 9. Unfortunately, the addition of Merrifield meant someone in the organization had to lose a spot on the 40-man roster. The Phillies also announced Monday that they will assign reliever Kaleb Ort to replace Merrifield. It’s a tough break for Ort, who has been DFA’d by three different organizations this season. He can still opt out and be part of the franchise if another team doesn’t pick him up..
Ort played three seasons for the Red Sox from 2021-23 but didn’t break out, going 2-4 with a 6.27 ERA and 1.70 WHIP in 47 appearances. Ort is 32 years old, so he doesn’t have much upside at this point in his career.
