Man killed after car crashes into tree in Walterboro

A man lost his life in a single-vehicle accident early Saturday morning near Walterboro, South Carolina. The crash occurred at approximately 12:15 a.m. on Benton Farm Road, close to the intersection with Rentz Drive, about five miles north of Walterboro.

 

According to Master Trooper William Bennett of the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the driver was operating a 2012 Chevrolet SUV heading northbound when the vehicle veered off the right side of the road. The SUV then crossed to the left side and collided with a tree. The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

 

The identity of the deceased has not been released pending notification of next of kin. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation to determine the cause of the crash.

 

This incident adds to a series of similar accidents in Colleton County. In April 2025, a driver was killed when their Nissan Frontier ran off Sidneys Road and struck a tree. Earlier, in March 2023, a man suffered multiple injuries after his Dodge pickup collided with a tree on Ritter Road.

 

Authorities urge drivers to exercise caution, especially during early morning hours when visibility is low and fatigue can impair judgment. They recommend adhering to speed limits, avoiding distractions, and ensuring vehicles are well-maintained to prevent such tragedies.
